Using the Archives and Library
The Barnes Foundation´s library consists of approximately 5,000 volumes, primarily related to
the history of art and to horticulture. The library is available for use by appointment by
students, staff, faculty, and docents of the Foundation.
|
The approximately two thousand linear feet of records in the Barnes Foundation´s archives have
only recently begun to be catalogued. Three professional archivists are currently working on
this project, thanks to generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National
Endowment for the Humanities.

|
Due to the considerable amount of cataloguing currently taking place, and the limited staff and space available to accommodate researchers, the archives is open for research to qualified researchers by appointment only. Please contact the Archives and Library Department for more information.

If you have a specific question about the history of the Foundation, please
contact the archives
and we will try to answer it via mail, e-mail, or telephone.
The archives is in the process of creating a number of finding aids, or
guides, to various parts
of its collection, which will be available online as they are completed.
Donating to the archives
The staff of the Barnes Foundation´s archives is happy to discuss potential donations to the
collection. These can include letters, photographs, and other materials from current and former
students, teachers, staff, and artists represented in the collection, as well as material from
private collections that directly relates to the history of the Foundation, its collection, or
its founder.
Prospective donors are invited to call, write, or e-mail the archives to discuss donations.
A deed of gift form must be completed by the Archivist and Librarian and signed by the donor
before the archives can take possession of donations. Once the archives takes possession of
a donation, the archives reserves the right to catalogue, make accessible to researchers,
or deaccession/discard any material at the discretion of the archives staff.
|
Archives staff cannot appraise donations. If a donor wishes to take a tax deduction for a
donation, the donor is responsible for having the donation appraised and for procuring the
appropriate paperwork before the deed of gift is signed.
