The Art and Aesthetics Program at the Barnes Foundation
Students in the art and aesthetics program learn to interpret the visual world and to think critically. The Foundation's approach emphasizes intense observation and explores correlation and meaning through personal experience and aesthetic awareness. Students who satisfactorily complete the three-year art and aesthetics program, including the third-year seminar and accompanying research paper, will receive a certificate of achievement. Classes meet in the Barnes Foundation's Gallery.
The Barnes Foundation is offering the following courses in the 2010 winter - spring semester. Each course offers a new perspective on the collection in a one-semester (14-week) format.
Art Now
Instructor: John B. Gatti, MFA
Thursdays, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
(Excursions on Fridays)
Discover how art addresses and responds to cultural, social, political, and ideological issues. This seminar will promote intellectual exploration, scholarship, and creativity through discussions about issues from the contemporary world of art and the study of art history. Students will have the opportunity to meet with artists, art dealers, scholars, and other visual arts professionals, plus visit regional exhibitions, cultural institutions, and artists' studios. Course highlights include visits to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Institute of Contemporary Art, a Center City art tour, Olde City gallery talks, First Friday in May, the Crane Arts Building, the Piazza in Northern Libs and more.
Modigliani, Pascin, And Soutine
Instructor: Leslie Bowen, MFA
Mondays, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Through an investigation of the plastic elements in the work of Amadeo Modigliani, Jules Pascin, and Chaim Soutine, this course will explore the artists' diverse responses to their surroundings and the culture in which they lived and worked. All three artists were Jewish expatriates, living in Paris in the 1920s and sharing a fascination with the studio and café life of Montmartre and Montparnasse. Their emotional work earned the artists the reputation of peintres maudits (cursed painters). The Barnes Foundation houses incredible masterpieces by these artists in numbers rarely seen anywhere in the world.
Comparisons, Contrasts, & Connections
Instructor: Michael Rossman, MFA
Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
The richness of the Barnes Foundation's collection stems from its inclusion of works that span historical periods, geography, and artistic styles. Ensembles comprised of individual pieces challenge viewers to open their minds and consider the resulting relationships. Comparisons among works can reveal diverse approaches to subject matter, composition, and technique. Simultaneously, this may also connect works across traditions and eras, and expose new formal relationships. This course, appropriate for the new student as well as those with some experience in visual art, will encourage an expanded appreciation of both individual artists' practice and the Barnes collection.
Art and Aesthetics Seminar
Instructor: John B. Gatti, MFA
Mondays, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This discussion-based course is a guided independent study, in which each student will work to create a unique thesis of his/her choice. Through group interpretation, wall ensemble evaluation, and select readings, students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas to research. After finishing a thesis paper, students who have already completed their first and second year courses will be honored by receiving an official, signed certificate for the successful completion of the Barnes Foundation's three-year program in art and aesthetics.
