Biographical note

Laura Leggett Barnes was born on February 13, 1875 in Brooklyn, New York, to Richard Lee Leggett and Clara Cox Leggett. Her father was a Civil War veteran who had served in New York City’s Seventh Regiment. Following the war, he operated a successful wholesale grocery business established by his father, Abram Leggett.[1] Laura was the fifth of six children, which included three boys and three girls in the following order: Ada, Majastre, Walter, Edith, and Albert.[2]

According to family friend Henry Hart,[3] Laura Leggett met Dr. Albert Coombs Barnes on August 19, 1900, while both were vacationing in Milford, PA.[4] The two became engaged on October 7, 1900, and were married at St. James Church in Brooklyn, New York, on June 4, 1901. They honeymooned abroad, sailing from Philadelphia to England and traveling through France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Gibraltar before returning to Brooklyn. On October 5, 1901, they moved into their first home at 6374 Drexel Road, Overbrook, Pennsylvania.[5]

The success of Argyrol, an antiseptic silver compound developed by Dr. Barnes and Hermann Hille, allowed the Barneses to purchase property and build a new home in 1905. Lauraston, an English-style house on North Latch’s Lane, Merion, Pennsylvania, was named in honor of Mrs. Barnes. At the residence, the Barneses held musicales featuring musicians such as violinist Vasil Vasilévich Bezekirskii and pianists Jean Verd and Axel Skejerne. They invited their friends and neighbors, including the renowned conductor Leopold Stokowski, to join them.

In 1922, Dr. Barnes purchased “Red-Slates,” the estate owned by Captain Joseph Lapsley Wilson. The property, also located on North Latch’s Lane, was only a few houses away from Lauraston. The purpose of the acquisition was to establish an educational institution with a focus on fine arts and horticulture, and to build a gallery for Dr. Barnes’s art collection. Dr. and Mrs. Barnes had a shared affinity for the Wilson Arboretum, and Dr. Barnes claimed to have tried to buy it for ten years.[6] The sale agreement stipulated that Dr. Barnes would continue to care for the trees on the property.[7] Once the sale was completed, Captain Wilson and his wife Caroline vacated Red Slates and moved into a house constructed on the estate. Captain Wilson was also appointed the first director of the Barnes Foundation Arboretum and a member of the Board of Trustees.

On December 4, 1922, the Barnes Foundation was chartered by the State of Pennsylvania as an educational institution, established to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts" and "for the study and for the encouragement of arboriculture and forestry."[8] With its founding, Mrs. Barnes was appointed vice president of the Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation. The gallery as well as the administration and service buildings were designed by the architect Paul Phillipe Cret and constructed from 1923 to 1924. During 1924 Cret also met with Mrs. Barnes regarding the construction of the teahouse, a small, one story building that includes a fireplace. Heavily involved with the activities of the arboretum, she began adding to the living collections as early as 1922 and corresponded with notable botanic collections such as the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, the Morris Arboretum at University of Pennsylvania, and the National Arboretum. Following the death of Captain Wilson in 1928, Mrs. Barnes became the director of the Barnes Foundation Arboretum.

Owing to sinus problems and under the recommendation of her doctors, Mrs. Barnes spent time in the Southwest in 1930.[9] While there, she stayed at the Kay El Bar Ranch in Arizona and visited the Grand Canyon with Dr. Barnes.[10] During this time, Dr. Barnes became interested in collecting Navajo rugs as well as Native American jewelry and pottery.

When exactly Mrs. Barnes became interested in horticulture is unclear. Although it might have begun while she was living at Lauraston, it became a much more serious pursuit after the purchase of Captain Wilson’s estate. Both Dr. and Mrs. Barnes were interested in educational practices and theories, and perhaps in preparation for teaching, they attended the College Courses for Teachers in 1915 to 1916 at the University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Barnes continued by taking a follow-up course, College Collateral Courses, in 1934. In that same year, she audited a course in Landscape Architecture to continue her horticultural education and development.[11] In addition to her studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Barnes sat in on classes held at the Barnes Foundation’s Arboretum School after its founding in 1940 and attended lectures held by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.[12]

In addition to her studies, Mrs. Barnes assembled a library of books on horticulture and botany, and corresponded with arboretums and horticulturists all over the country. She also visited famous gardens during the couple’s travels abroad in the 1930s and 1940s, notably the Kew Gardens in London, Jardins de Plates in Paris, and Palm Garden in Frankfurt.[13] In an effort to continue to expand and develop the arboretum, Dr. and Mrs. Barnes hired Frank A. Schrepfer, professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, as a professional consultant to design aspects of the landscape. In his publication “The Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation,” Schrepfer credits Mrs. Barnes with having “added new plants and brought together the fine collection of ferns and wild flowers.”[14] He contributed a rose garden, the small pool, and wisteria arbor to the Arboretum.

In the late 1930s, Mrs. Barnes approached Assistant Professor of Botany and Curator of the Herbarium of the University of Pennsylvania Dr. John Milton Fogg, Jr., and asked him for help with the development of the faculty and curriculum for an arboretum school.[15] As stated in the brochure: “Following the purpose of the Barnes Foundation as an educational institution, the Arboretum offers during the 1940–41 season, courses in practical, scientific, and esthetic phases of Botany, Horticulture and Landscape architecture. These related subjects have become increasingly important to hosts of amateurs and professionals during the last few years.”[16] She reiterated this sentiment in a lecture to the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta: “Many of our universities do not even have courses in botany and horticulture, and it seems to be set up to our arboretums to give necessary instruction in these subjects in order to fill the need for our trained helpers.”[17]

The Arboretum School, as it was formally named, shared the same basic principles as the art appreciation classes taught in the gallery. “The woody plants in the Arboretum are intended to supplement educational activities of the Foundation by illustrating plant characters, such as form, texture, color, seasonal changes and floral display.”[18] The classes were not accredited by a university, nor were there any examinations or certificates given. The program, like the art and aesthetics program, had no prerequisites but a sincere interest in the subject matter as demonstrated by attendance. There was a two absence only policy allowed, which Mrs. Barnes strictly enforced. The school began in October 1940 with Frederick W. G. Peck of the American Society of Landscape Architects teaching “Landscape Architecture,” Dr. John M. Fogg, Jr. teaching “Botany,” and Mrs. Barnes instructing a class on “Plant Materials.” Her class was described as being from “the practical point of view.”[19] She arranged for classes and lectures to be held in Captain Wilson’s former residence at 57 Lapsley Road, which came to be called the Arboretum House.[20]

In 1940 Dr. Barnes purchased Ker-Feal, an eighteenth century fieldstone farmhouse in Chester County, Pennsylvania. “A pre-revolutionary farmhouse preserved in its original condition and furnished with authentic furniture.”[21] The grounds at Ker-Feal, which included 137 acres of mixed woodlands and fields, allowed Mrs. Barnes to expand the living plant collections and develop a landscape design on her own. She designed the terrace garden, planted fruit trees and flowers, and converted a quartz quarry into a botanical garden.[22] Ker-Feal was seen as an extension of the educational mission of the Barnes Foundation, and students of the Arboretum School were invited to study on the grounds with Mrs. Barnes at least once a year.[23]

On July 24, 1951, Dr. Barnes died suddenly in an automobile accident. After his death, Mrs. Barnes became president of the Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation. Acting as both the president of the Foundation and director of the Arboretum, Mrs. Barnes attempted to uphold the original intentions of keeping the Foundation open primarily to its own students. However, after many years of litigation, the gallery was opened to the public in 1961.

Mrs. Barnes became a successful horticulturist, writing articles as well as winning awards. She wrote and published two articles, “Cultivation of Hardy Ferns” in the Arboretum Bulletin of the Associates, based on lectures she gave at the Morris Arboretum in 1939, and “Ferns for a Garden,” also in the  Arboretum Bulletin of the Associates in 1942. Among the awards she received for her achievements were the Shaffer Memorial Medal of the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society in 1948, an honorary membership to the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1955, and an honorary degree in horticultural sciences from St. Joseph’s University in 1957.

In 1965, at the age of 89 and in failing health, Mrs. Barnes participated in her last European trip, which included stops in Austria, Germany, Belgium, and Holland. She died on April 29, 1966 at the age of 91. Her sister Edith survived her. Most of her estate was left to Philadelphia area hospitals: Bryn Mawr Hospital, Jefferson Hospital, and the University of Pennsylvania Hospitals. Her personal art collection, which was separate from that of the Foundation, was left to the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

In Henry Hart’s book, Dr. Barnes of Merion, he described Mrs. Barnes as a match for Dr. Barnes as she “…gave his life stability and dignity his particular kind of temperament very much required.”[24] According to Dr. Fogg, who became director of the Barnes Foundation Arboretum upon Mrs. Barnes’s death, she had a “magnetic personality” separate from the “outspoken” character of Dr. Barnes. He also described her as having “…a marvelous sense of humor, and although as I say she was a tiny little thing, it took a pretty active student to keep up with her on the grounds. She said, ‘now what’s the matter with you back there? Come on, follow me! If you want to hear what I have to say, you have to stay near me!’”[25]
