Tuesday, June 17
Botanical Illustration Workshops
Plant lovers and artists alike will find these workshops to be engaging and fun. Students will learn about standards of
form and perspective, hone keen observational skills, and practice depicting plant components. These workshops will provide an abundance of applicable information and hands-on experience in botanical illustration. No experience is necessary.
Participants are asked to bring all materials; a materials list will be mailed with a confirmation letter.
Foundation Drawing For Botanical Illustration
Session I: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Learn specific skills for drawing plant specimen
accurately with graphite pencil. This workshop will
introduce and help develop industry standards of form,
measurement, foreshortening, and perspective.
Botanical Watercolor
Session II: 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Discover how to use watercolor for botanical illustration,
utilizing the interaction of light and shadow in correct
hues and values. This workshop will allow students to
focus on selecting colors, producing a pleasing
composition, and creating accurate botanical painting.
$50.00 for one session, $90.00 for both sessions

Thursday, June 26
Growing and Re-Blooming Orchids
Learn the methods of growing and re-blooming this large family of plants, which are famous for their attractive flowers that
require minimal care. The workshop will be held in the Barnes Foundation's state-of-the-art greenhouse and will include a general
lecture on orchids, discussion about proper containers and propagation methods, a question-and-answer session on orchid gardening,
and hands-on demonstrations of planting and repotting one of the world's most beautiful flowers. Additionally, participants are
encouraged to bring in his or her own orchid for advice on care and maintenance.

Tuesday, July 15
Ideal Ferns For Your Gardens
Participants will learn the many uses of ferns in various garden settings, including Laura Barnes's fern dell at the Barnes
Foundation. This workshop will involve discussions of
different conditions for planting ferns and their applications in gardening. Participants will also consider ideal native,
ornamental ferns that are suitable for home gardens in the Philadelphia region. The day will include a tour of the woodland at the
Barnes's Arboretum, which houses an exceptional collection of hardy ferns, and a hands-on demonstration of dividing and potting
ferns.

Matisse Paper Cut-outs
This two-day workshop will explore and focus on the Henri Matisse's unique and unorthodox method of using cut paper to plan artwork
creations. This artistic approach became a medium in its own right, making Matisse's late work as original, vital, and
controversial as his earlier Fauvist pieces. In addition to discussing relevant art in the Gallery, participants will learn more
about this distinctive medium as well as discover their inner Matisse with a hands-on lesson in cut paper design. Please bring a
brown bag lunch.

Building The Landscape: From Arboretum to Container Gardening
Drawing upon the Barnes's world-renowned art collection and arboretum, discover the aesthetic elements that painters,
horticulturalists, and designers use to create magnificent sceneries, gardens, and environmental structures. Participants will be
encouraged to seek inspiration from the Barnes's art collection, gardens, and surrounding landscape in the creation of their own
container garden. Please bring a brown bag lunch and wear appropriate clothing for walking and gardening. Rain or shine.

Surrealism : Inner Visions, Outer Limits
What makes a painting surreal? Explore the compositional devices of surrealist and early modernist painters, using selected works
from the Barnes collection. Discover a world in which dreams and reality coexist, and artists reveal their deepest psychological
musings. Participants will analyze works by de Chirico, Klee, Matisse, Miró, Picasso, and Rousseau, and will engage the
visual, tactile, and olfactory senses through a series of interactive and stimulating exercises. Please bring a brown bag lunch.
