The Barnes Foundation's Arboretum program has been educating students in the field of horticulture since its creation under Laura Leggett Barnes in 1940. Our 17 experienced instructors use a combination of classroom lecture, garden visits, self-guided learning, and hands-on practice to increase your knowledge of botanical science and plant history, as well as your aesthetic pleasure.

First Year

Curriculum for First -Year students includes: Garden Practicum; Introduction to Design for Horticulturalists; Introduction to Landscape Design; Plant Ecology; Plant Structure and Function; Principles of Plant Systematics; and Survey of the Plant Kingdom. Learn more

Curriculum for Second-Year students includes: Cultivated Trees and Shrubs; Garden Practicum; Herbaceous Plants; and History of Gardens and Landscape Architecture. Learn more

Curriculum for Third-Year students includes: Horticulture Practices and Plant Culture; Integrated Pest Management; Invasive Plants; Landscape Architecture II; Landscape Architecture III; Plant Disease Identification and Control; and Soil Science. Learn more
