The program, implemented in 2014, combines in-class learning for children led by Barnes educators, a structured tour of the Barnes Collection Gallery in Philadelphia, and professional development workshops, accessible curriculum resources, and mentoring to encourage teachers to use the visual arts effectively in their classrooms.
Program curriculum reinforces Pennsylvania Learning Standards for Early Childhood for creative thinking and expression. Several curricular modules also promote state standards for mathematical thinking and early literacy skills in reading, writing, and listening.
Approximately 300 students and 30 teachers are participating in the program in the current academic year through partnerships with the School District of Philadelphia's Office of Early Childhood Education.
Look! Reflect! Connect!: Art Exploration for Young Children with the Barnes is a PNC Grow Up Great Initiative.
