Gardening for Beginners

Designed for those who are new to gardening or have dabbled a bit but can’t seem to get it right. Learning the basic functions of plants; how to test your soil; and the fundamentals of plant selection, installation, and maintenance gets you on your way to a greener thumb.

Cracking the Container

Instructor: Dan Benarcik, horticulturist at Chanticleer
Learn how to make your next planter a massive success with instructor Dan Benarcik, container specialist at Chanticleer. Select the right container and medium and get specific instructions on how to achieve various design outcomes using a variety of plant material. The last class is a practicum, where students select from among Dan’s favorite plants to design and install their own fabulous container to take home.

Roses: growing and knowing the world’s favorite flower

Instructor: Nicole Juday
Despite its reputation for being tricky, no flower is more beloved or culturally symbolic than the rose. Learn about the history of this plant in order to gain clues on how to grow it successfully. The lecture is followed by a tour of the Barnes Arboretum’s rose garden.
