The Barnes Foundation, in partnership with the Garden Conservancy Open Days invites you to tour outstanding gardens of alumni of the Barnes Horticulture Program. Purchase a discounted day pass to visit any or all participating gardens on the date your pass is valid. $7 admission to individual gardens also available onsite on the day of your visit.

Ferns and their Allies of the Barnes Arboretum

The Barnes Arboretum is home to one of the most extensive collections of hardy ferns in the country. Expand your knowledge about both native and notable non-native ferns suitable for this region, and learn how to identify, cultivate, and create effective designs using ferns. Participants should bring a lunch to enjoy in the garden.

Make More Plants: Propagation workshop

Instructor: Bruce Keyser

The best time of year to propagate many trees and shrubs is midsummer. In this hands-on workshop, learn techniques for successfully rooting greenwood cuttings from master propagator Bruce Keyser, using plant material from the Barnes Arboretum living collections. Participants make their own sweatboxes, a key to successfully rooting the cuttings they take home. Fee includes all materials; participants should bring their own lunch.

The Art and Nature of the Garden Sketchbook

Learn various graphic techniques that go beyond traditional record-keeping to record and enrich your observations about the natural world and your garden. Using graphic illustration (pencil, watercolor, and other media) and principles of landscape architecture, create a beautiful and valuable reference to inspire you, help you see more creatively, and make you a better gardener.
