Barnes Foundation

Free First Sunday: Collecting Creatively

The Barnes offers free admission and programs on the first Sunday of every month. Visitors are welcome to attend talks, performances, and hands-on activities throughout the day.

Unless otherwise noted, all programs take place in the Annenberg Court.

1–1:30 pm Performance by KIPP's Honor Band
KIPP Philadelphia Schools is honored to present their first ever All-Region Honor Band. The band, comprised of musicians and vocalists from KIPP elementary, middle, and high schools will delight and inspire. Be prepared for the power of music and the strength of the KIPP team.

1–4 pm Hands-on ArtSee Activities: African Art Adventure (Lower Level)
Masks are used for protection, performance, and important celebrations. Get into the spirit of things by creating a face mask, collaging a mask bag, and crafting a beaded braid.

1:35–3 pm Celebration of Black Writing presentation and reading
Join Valerie Gay, executive director of Art Sanctuary, as she unveils the lineup for the May 2016 Celebration of Black Writing (CBW). CBW is one of the nation’s oldest and most prominent festivals spotlighting black literature and visual and performing arts. Founded by Larry Robin of the iconic Robin’s Books, CBW became an Art Sanctuary program in 2001.

After the presentation, join the CBW 2016 lineup for a reading of work by the author who’ll be honored at the CBW award ceremony this May.

ArtSee Activities: African Art Adventure

ArtSee Activities: African Art Adventure

Masks are used for protection, performance, and important celebrations. Get into the spirit of things by creating a face mask, collaging a mask bag, and crafting a beaded braid.

When you arrive, pick up your free program tickets on site to access the activities. Collection Gallery admission is not included.

Pablo Picasso painted many pictures starring circus acrobats and Harlequin figures, which will surely inspire the dazzling colors and patterns in the costume designs that you fashion.

Circus Surprise

Spring break family Artventure

A fun learning experience for children aged 7–16 and their accompanying adults. Adults examine circus-themed art in the Collection Gallery while the kids get creative interpreting circus characters and costumes in their own masterpieces. The Artventure peaks when the families come together to compare their experiences with fresh viewpoints and lots to talk about.
