Labeled “friends but enemies” by Gertrude Stein, who introduced them, Picasso and Matisse famously challenged and inspired each other over the course of their prolific careers. Learn about the friendship, mutual influences, and storied creative rivalry of these two giants of modern art.

Member and Alumni Preview: Lilac Day at the Arboretum

Barnes members, students, and alumni are invited for a special preview of the Barnes Arboretum and celebration of the lilac collection. View a pruning demonstration by Ann Dixon, Barnes Arboretum gardener, and take part in guided tours highlighting the arboretum’s fragrant and colorful lilacs, including a variety of Syringa vulgaris named for the Barnes Foundation. Enjoy a presentation about Laura Barnes with archival photos and documents detailing the lilac grove’s design and importance. A great opportunity to share with family and friends!

Artist and muralist Michelle Ortiz focuses on people and communities whose histories are often lost or co-opted. Join Ortiz for a walking tour through South Philly’s Italian Market. Learn about the contributions immigrant communities have made to our city, and meet vendors who will share their immigrant experiences and family histories. Meet at the northwest corner of 9th and Washington.
