ARTime Storytime: Henri’s Walk to Paris

Holiday wreath workshop

Instructors: Nicole Juday, horticulturist, and Rachel Burlington, Barnes gardener

Using fresh-cut greens from the Barnes Arboretum and unusual natural decorative elements, learn simple techniques to create a custom wreath more beautiful and long-lasting than anything commercially available.

First Friday! Artists on Site

Join us for the East coast’s first taste of Flash, a dance theater duet written, choreographed, and performed by hip-hop artist Rennie Harris and butoh (Japanese dance theater) artist Michael Sakamoto. Hip-hop and butoh were born from urban subcultures in the postwar era, and embody a philosophical approach to the creation of cultural identity through dance. In partnership with the Painted Bride. The evening includes an educational talk on the significance of bringing practicing artists into the classroom.

William Glackens: Major Works and Sketchbooks

Join this intimate program in partnership with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Enjoy an hour-long tour of William Glackens while learning about the lifelong friendship between Glackens and Dr. Barnes. After a short walk to PAFA’s campus, you’ll be treated to a rare look at Glackens’s sketchbooks.

Program ticket includes access to both organizations’ collections: Barnes Foundation 10 am–6 pm; PAFA 10 am–5 pm.

1–2 pm tour of William Glackens (Barnes Foundation)
2–2:30 pm self-guided tour with map to PAFA (15-minute stroll or 5-minute cab ride)
2:30–3 pm Glackens’s sketchbooks (PAFA)

“A New Type of Store”: Department Stores and Popular Culture, 1880–1930

Join Clare Sauro, curator of the Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection at Drexel University, for a presentation detailing the rise of the department store in the 19th century and its role in popular culture. Special emphasis is placed on Philadelphia’s own John Wanamaker, who transformed retailing and ushered in new attitudes towards fashion and consumer culture, which Glackens became famous for painting.
