“A New Type of Store”: Department Stores and Popular Culture, 1880–1930

Join Clare Sauro, curator of the Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection at Drexel University, for a presentation detailing the rise of the department store in the 19th century and its role in popular culture. Special emphasis is placed on Philadelphia’s own John Wanamaker, who transformed retailing and ushered in new attitudes towards fashion and consumer culture, which Glackens became famous for painting.
