Spoken Hand Orchestra

First Friday! Global Patterns

Join us to celebrate the global nature of the Barnes collection. See the collection and enjoy cocktails while listening to the global beats of Philadelphia’s own Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra. Rediscover the collection with Riddles in the Collection, and let a gallery talk on the Yinka Shonibare MBE: Magic Ladders exhibition leave you inspired!

Program:
6–9 pm: collection and special exhibition access
6–8:30 pm: Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra unifies four percussion batteries: North Indian tabla, Afro Cuban bata, Brazilian samba, and West African djembe.
6–9 pm: Riddles in the Collection. Come explore the global nature of the collection and see if you can answer the riddles!
6:30–6:50 pm: A short talk on African pieces in the collection, and insight on the Afro-Latino masks that continue to inspire artists and cultures from around the world. Presenters include John Gatti, Barnes senior instructor of art and aesthetics, and Carmen Febo, executive director of Taller Puertorriqueño.
6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 pm: The Collector 20-min. screening
7–7:20 pm: Yinka Shonibare gallery talk
