African Textiles Lecture and Circles Reception

Alisa LaGamma, curator of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Met, discusses historical and contemporary African textiles and their use in contemporary art, such as the textiles Shonibare works in. She provides a history of Dutch wax fabric and its introduction to Africa, and links it to the textile traditions of West Africa, which historically reflect political and social aspiration. She is a contributor to the Foundation’s forthcoming catalogue on African art and has written a catalogue on African textiles at the Met. Members of the Circles enjoy a reception with LaGamma following the lecture.
