When Dr. Barnes showcased his collection at PAFA in 1923, the Philadelphia art establishment reviewed it as radical and even vulgar. Consider how America has been introduced to avant-garde practice and work by artists from abroad, and how exhibitions have exposed audiences to "the shock of the new.”
