   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Enrollment is now open for Autumn 2006 classes in
Art and Horticulture at the Barnes Foundation

LOWER MERION, PA, July 26, 2006 - The famed art collection and world-class arboretum of The Barnes Foundation will once again host a wide range of distinctive education programs, for novices and advanced students alike, when the Foundation offers its courses for autumn 2006.

Enrollment is now open for the fall semester courses, which begin immediately after Labor Day. Most courses may be taken for college credit, and Pennsylvania teachers may earn Act 48 hours. The public is invited to contact the Education Department at 610.667.0290, ext. 2259.

People who want to deepen their appreciation of the visual arts will especially welcome the Foundation's courses in "Introduction to Visual Literacy" and "Traditions of Art," which guide students through a process of intense observation and critical thinking. As always at The Barnes Foundation, the core experience is a direct encounter with great, original works of art.

The Arboretum School, staffed by a faculty of eighteen experienced instructors, continues to offer a comprehensive course of study in the botanical sciences, horticultural practices and garden design and aesthetics. Aspiring horticulturalists may begin with courses in "Garden Appreciation and Record Keeping," "Introduction to Landscape Design," "Survey of the Plant Kingdom" and more, before going on to more advanced topics.

A complete course catalogue and registration form is available on-line by clicking here.

About The Barnes Foundation
Dr. Albert C. Barnes established The Barnes Foundation in 1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts." Since then, education has remained at the heart of the Foundation. The Barnes Foundation's use of its art collection to enhance discussion and critical problem-solving skills is truly innovative. For more than eighty years artists, teachers, historians, and people from many other walks of life have enjoyed the benefits of this education program and its democratic mission.

The Foundation's collection of French paintings of the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern eras is among the finest in the world. The Foundation is noted for its extraordinary number of masterpieces by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse, which provide a depth of works by these artists that is unsurpassed. Works by Picasso, Seurat, Rousseau, Modigliani, Soutine, Monet, Manet, Degas, Van Gogh, and others are also a part of The Foundation's renowned collection.

The Barnes Foundation's arboretum is as vital an asset to The Foundation as its art collection. Used for the horticulture program, the arboretum contains a world-class collection of ferns, stewartia, magnolias, and lilacs. For more than five decades, it has provided an unparalleled resource for horticultural education.
