About The Barnes Foundation
Dr. Albert C. Barnes established The Barnes Foundation in 1922 to "promote the
advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts." Since then,
education has remained at the heart of the Foundation. The Barnes Foundation's
use of its art collection to enhance discussion and critical problem-solving
skills is truly innovative. For more than eighty years artists, teachers,
historians, and people from many other walks of life have enjoyed the benefits of
this education program and its democratic mission.
The Foundation's collection of French paintings of the Impressionist,
Post-Impressionist and early Modern eras is among the finest in the world.
The Foundation is noted for its extraordinary number of masterpieces by Renoir,
Cézanne, and Matisse, which provide a depth of works by these artists that is
unsurpassed. Works by Picasso, Seurat, Rousseau, Modigliani, Soutine, Monet,
Manet, Degas, Van Gogh, and others are also a part of The Foundation's renowned
collection.
The Barnes Foundation's arboretum is as vital an asset to The Foundation as its art
collection. Used for the horticulture program, the arboretum contains a world-class
collection of ferns, stewartia, magnolias, and lilacs. For more than five decades,
it has provided an unparalleled resource for horticultural education.
