About the Class

This class will discuss the traditional meanings and uses of the African sculpture collected by Albert Barnes. We will also consider the impact of colonialism and imperialism, which resulted in the dissemination of African material culture and popularized the cultures that are represented in the Barnes collection.

Dwaune Latimer

Latimer is the Jean Friendly Keeper of African Collections at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Her research interests include museum anthropology, material culture studies, representation, world's fairs, popular culture, and weaving.
