About the Class

The Barnes Foundation contains a diverse collection of American art, including paintings, furniture, pottery, ceramics, and textiles that span several traditions. Explore the many manifestations of American arts at the Barnes—with an eye toward their aesthetically expressed qualities and toward a broader understanding of what is “American” about American art.

William Perthes

William Perthes is senior instructor for art and aesthetics at the Barnes. He has also taught courses at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and West Chester and Villanova Universities. His scholarship focuses on American modernism and the abstract expressionist painter Robert Motherwell.
