About the Class

How does an artist’s choice of materials affect the appearance of a painting? Explore historical materials and techniques with a focus on impressionist, post-impressionist, and early modern paintings. Look closely at paintings in the collection and learn about media and techniques like fresco, egg tempera, oil, and modern synthetic paints.

Barbara Buckley

Senior director of conservation and chief conservator of paintings at the Barnes, Buckley has published frequently on the techniques of artists, including the work of Joshua Reynolds, Horace Pippin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Henri Matisse.
