About the Class
Learn to better understand Dr. Albert Barnes’s unusual wall groupings, known as “ensembles.” An early example of installation art before the term existed, these groupings include art from multiple cultures, periods, and mediums placed together by Dr. Barnes to stimulate the viewer’s ability to see connections between diverse objects.
Review the formal elements of light, line, color, and space, and learn about John Dewey’s influence on Dr. Barnes. Then move toward a consideration of cultural context for chosen artists and explore the ways current installation artists encourage the same out-of-the-box looking.
Molly Walker, MA, is an art instructor at the Barnes Foundation and an adjunct professor at Lincoln University.
