About the Film

As part of this summer’s special exhibition on Bill Viola, the Barnes is holding free weekly screenings of the artist’s 1986 feature-length work I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like in the Comcast NBCUniversal Auditorium.

I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like is a powerful study of spirituality, perception, and the cycles of life and death. In this 89-minute single-channel videotape, the artist creates an ecstatic catalogue of moving-image reveries on time, nature, and all living creatures. An ambitious artwork with a global point of view, it is a touchstone for the Viola exhibition.
