About the Event

Sun Ra (1914–1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, pianist, poet, and philosopher known for his experimental music and theatrical performances.

Tonight’s program—Satellites Are Spinning: A Sizzling, Sonic Celebration of Sun Ra—celebrates this visionary artist with a mix of Sun Ra classics, jazz, poetry, funk, hip-hop, rock, and more.

In 2014, the Philadelphia Jazz Project developed a special mixtape project honoring Sun Ra. There are now seven mixtapes featuring more than 50 compositions and over 100 artists. Continuing this exploration of the influence of Sun Ra, the Philadelphia Jazz Project in collaboration WRTI radio host J. Michael Harrison presents tonight’s program. This is the first of eight performances within the region.

Tonight's performers include drummer Kim Pedro Rodriguez, vocalists Kevin Valentine and Raphael Xavier, and saxophonists Tyrone Fredericks Jr. and Sun Ra Arkestra veteran Terry Lawson.
