About the Event

Of Paul Cézanne’s 24 oil portraits of his wife Hortense Fiquet Cézanne, five of them (six if we count the one painted over to create Bay of L’Estaque) are in Philadelphia. Touching the World—The Barnes Foundation’s Portraits of Madame Cézanne will focus on the two paintings in the Barnes collection, Woman with Green Hat (Madame Cézanne), 1891–92, and Portrait of Madame Cézanne, 1888–90, which offer insight into their complex relationship and undervalued collaboration. Join Susan Sidlauskas, professor of the history and theory of modern art at Rutgers University, as she explores how the Barnes portraits demonstrate Cézanne’s dependence on his wife to explore the senses with an uncommon intensity.
