About the Talk

Join us for an introduction to the work of Chaim Soutine, in anticipation of our Spring 2021 exhibition Soutine / de Kooning: Conversations in Paint. Karen Serres, curator of paintings at the Courtauld Gallery, London, will discuss the artist and one of his most remarkable achievements: a powerful series of portraits made in the early 1920s of restaurant and hotel service staff. One of these portraits, The Pastry Chef, caught the eye of Dr. Barnes, who ended up buying dozens of Soutine’s works—a decisive moment in the artist’s career. Thirty years later, another work in the series, on display in New York at the first Soutine retrospective in 1950, helped influence a turning point in Willem de Kooning’s art.

Registrants will be emailed a link for the talk on Thursday, October 29.
