It’s the first Sunday of the month, which means free admission at the Barnes. This month, we’re exploring creativity, music, and environmental responsibility with our partners at Musicopia, a nonprofit that provides access to music education and enrichment for Philadelphia students.

Enjoy performances by renowned percussionist Dendê Macêdo, who crafts musical instruments from found materials to deliver a message about protecting our environment through reuse and recycling. Art lovers of all ages can also explore art making and family activities related to helping the environment.

Plus, visit the Barnes collection galleries and our new exhibition, Sue Williamson & Lebohang Kganye: Tell Me What You Remember.

Limited capacity. Registration opens Thursday, March 30, at 10am.

Donation Drive for Musical Instruments

Have an instrument you’d like to give a second life? Bring it to the Barnes and donate it to Musicopia. The group’s Gift of Music Program collects, repairs, and places gently used instruments in schools with students who are eager to play but cannot afford to rent or buy one. Through this statewide initiative, Musicopia has collected and shared more than 6,000 instruments over the past decade.

Recycled Sounds with Dendê Macêdo

In interactive performances, percussionist Dendê Macêdo plays musical instruments that he has made from found materials. Using a loop pedal, he creates brief recordings of each recycled instrument, layering the sounds together. The end result is a vibrant percussive piece that inspires audiences to look differently at what they would normally throw away.
