About the Event
It’s the first Sunday of the month, which means free admission at the Barnes! Visitors have access to the collection and photography exhibition, plus all our family activities and entertainment.
Creative creatures come in all shapes and sizes! Today we're inspiring fun with Mexican folk art. Come see colorful fantastical beasts, hear creative stories, and watch talented young musicians from Philadelphia.
10 – 4pm
Exhibition: Mexican Folk Art
Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of imaginary animals, traditionally made from papier-mâché. Come see dozens of these weird and wonderful creations, presented in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural Center as part of the city's annual Mexican Week.
12 – 2pm
Let's Connect Open Studio Hours
Drop by the Mural Arts Studio to meet painter Jonathan D. Pinkett and learn about his work during open studio hours. Jonathan was selected for residency as a part of Let's Connect: Philly's Artists Take on the Barnes.
Pinkett and his Barnes-inspired painting.
Talks: Mexican Folk Art
Learn more about alebrijes during short talks led by local artist Cesar Viveros. In celebration of Philadelphia's annual Mexican Week, talks will be given in English and Spanish.
10am – 4pm
Find inspiration in Henri Rousseau’s paintings of wild animals and make your own beasts in fabric, felt, and clay. Learn about exquisite corpse, a collaborative approach to drawing, and make picture books where you can mix-and-match parts from different animals—say, a lion’s head, a bear’s belly, chicken feet—to create brand-new species.
Activities change throughout the day.
10 – 10:30am; 12:15 – 12:45pm
Pinkalicious Pinkerton, the art-loving star of the PBS Kids cartoon Pinkalicious & Peterrific and the popular book series Pinkalicious, is stopping by the Barnes. If you’re feeling creative—like Pinkalicious—wear your favorite pink outfit and take a picture with her.
Join storytellers from Baby Wordplay for creative tales told with pictures and songs.
2:05 – 2:25pm
Music: Friends Select School
The Friends Select Percussion Ensembles, made up of fifth to 12th graders, share original works and the music of Steve Reich played on traditional instruments and everyday objects—like street signs and steel fences. Friends Select School is a Quaker school located on the Parkway. Ensembles are led by music teacher Dan Capecchi.
Free tickets are available on-site at 10am, include collection access, and are limited to four per person. Families with children under 18 get priority access to the collection at the time of arrival. Tickets go fast, but you don’t need one to enjoy our other activities and performances. Just drop by anytime during the day!
