About the Class

The paintings and pastels of Edgar Degas can look effortless and spontaneous. However, the artist was very deliberate in constructing his works of art, using numerous preparatory drawings and studies—a technique dating from the Renaissance—as well as photographs. Led by a working artist, this course will examine the Degas works in the Barnes collection, situating them in the history of academic art instruction, and comparing them with works of other artists in the Barnes, including Seurat and Cézanne, as well as more contemporary examples. Learn how to use the grid, a traditional artist’s tool, to make a drawing from your own photograph.

Capacity: 25

Barnes classes will:

  • Sharpen your observational and critical thinking skills.
  • Improve your ability to communicate about art.
  • Deepen your appreciation for cultures and histories outside your own.
