About the Class

Celebrate our summer exhibition, From Paris to Provence: French Painting at the Barnes, with this two-hour seminar held directly in front of some of the most beloved paintings in the collection. Join us in the Roberts Gallery as we look closely at works like Monet’s Studio Boat, Van Gogh’s Smoker, Seurat’s Port of Honfleur, and Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire—all of which normally hang in ahistorical groupings in the permanent collection.

With these and some 40 other key paintings temporarily reshuffled, we have a rare opportunity to make new comparisons, ask new questions, and tell new stories about their role in the history of modern French art. We’ll connect these paintings to their historical contexts, thinking about how artists grappled with the rise of industry and changing conceptions of nature; and we’ll explore the role of place in an artist’s practice, from a rapidly modernizing Paris to the bucolic South of France.

Capacity: 25 per session
