About the Class

Sicily has long captured the modern public imagination. From The Godfather to Cinema Paradiso to The White Lotus, stories of intrigue and romance unfold against the backdrop of the island’s ruins, resorts, and stunning natural beauty. But what is the history of this magical place? In this four-week class, we’ll learn how Sicily’s status as the largest island in the Mediterranean meant that it was a crossroads for numerous cultures. We will explore the island’s rich artistic history from antiquity to the early modern era, examining the civilizations, empires, and kingdoms that clashed and combined over thousands of years to create its distinctive aesthetic.
