About the Class

What can an hour of close observation reveal about a single work of art? In this immersive conversation, we’ll discuss Maria Helena Vieira da Silva’s The Domestic Symphony, one of the more enigmatic works in the Barnes collection. Using our state-of-the-art digital learning platform, we’ll study the painting closely to find the meaning behind Vieira da Silva’s non-representational composition. Whether you’re a seasoned museumgoer or a first-time learner, this immersion offers a meditative, interactive approach that will heighten your perceptual skills.

Instructor

Naina Saligram

Saligram is a fellow researching the 46 works by Picasso at the Barnes. She has previously held positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Yale University Art Gallery and is passionate about interdisciplinary approaches to modernism. In addition to her academic background in art history, she has studied creative nonfiction and poetry with writers including Anne Fadiman and Ellen Bass.

Barnes Method

Barnes Method courses follow the teachings of Albert Barnes and Violette de Mazia. Classes focus on rigorous formal analysis and direct visual engagement with works of art. In this method, close looking at art helps build critical-thinking skills that can be carried beyond the gallery walls.
