A docent-led tour is the ultimate way to experience the Barnes and understand the principles that founder Albert Barnes called the “universal language of art.” Enjoy a 60-minute tour with our specially trained docents (one docent provided per six people; subject to change with capacity restrictions). Includes self-guided access for the remainder of your visit.
Self-Guided Visits (Standard & Plus)
Tour for as long as you like, at your own pace, with a self-guided standard visit. Or dive deeper into the artists and stories behind the works in the collection with a self-guided plus visit, which begins with a 30-minute presentation by one of our docents. Self-guided groups are encouraged to use Barnes Focus—our free mobile guide to the galleries. This is a great way to explore the collection and learn something new.
New Themed Tour: When Art Is Magic
“He is the true enchanter, whose spell operates, not upon the senses, but upon the imagination and the heart.” —Washington Irving
Led by a docent, this enchanting journey through the Barnes collection shares how artists created their spellbinding works. Learn how Cézanne paints still-life apples that seem to magically move; how Seurat conjures colors; how Pippin, instead of using a wand, makes images appear with a hot poker on wood; and how Rousseau summons lost loved ones on canvas. Plus, see Egyptian and African works that may have been used in the performance of spells. Also available as virtual tour.
