The Barnes Foundation Announces the 2024 Barnes Art Ball
The Barnes Foundation has announced its annual benefit, the Barnes Art Ball, taking place on Friday, October 18. This year’s Art Ball brings together artists, philanthropists, collectors, connectors, and community partners for an art-filled celebration of the Barnes and creativity. Funds raised directly support our educational mission, exhibition program, and care of the collection, and a wide array of community, artistic, and scholarly projects.
Today, Saint Joseph’s University and the Barnes Foundation announced a new online graduate program designed to prepare future museum educators for roles in public and private institutions. Beginning in fall 2024, the museum education graduate program will offer a Master of Arts in Museum Education and a Museum Education Certificate.
In fall 2024, the Barnes Foundation will present Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, the first major international tour focused on the work of pioneering artist Mickalene Thomas, whose influences range from 19th-century painting to popular culture. Co-organized by the Hayward Gallery, London, and The Broad, Los Angeles, and in partnership with the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, All About Love is being shown as a series of independent presentations, with further venues to be confirmed. Curated for the Barnes by Renée Mussai, independent curator, scholar, and writer, this exhibition will be on view in the Roberts Gallery from October 20, 2024, through January 12, 2025.
The Barnes Foundation Joins with Philadelphia Cultural Organizations to Present Third Annual Early Learner Summer Pods
The Barnes Foundation has announced Early Learner Summer Pods, a citywide effort realized with six other cultural organizations in Philadelphia, offering free summer enrichment activities for children ages five and under living in underserved communities. Made possible with support from the William Penn Foundation, Early Learner Summer Pods take place over six weeks, between July and August, 2024, and are expected to engage nearly 1,000 early learners and their caregivers through play, art, science, nature, and stories.
Barnes West Announces Artists Selected for Fourth Annual Everyday Places Artist Partnerships
Barnes West, a collaboration between the Barnes Foundation and community organizations in West Philadelphia, has announced the four West Philadelphia–based social-impact artists selected to participate in its fourth annual Everyday Places Artist Partnerships initiative: Irene Osorio, Lori Waselchuk, and Qiaira Riley & Yannick Lowery, who are participating as a pair.
The Barnes Foundation announces the seventh annual Barnes on the Block, in collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia, on Sunday, July 14, noon–5 pm. Barnes on the Block with Mural Arts Philadelphia is presented by PNC Arts Alive.
This summer, the Barnes Foundation and Mural Arts Philadelphia present Visions, an exhibition of original work created by artists from Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Guild program and artists at State Correctional Institution Phoenix (SCI Phoenix), southeast Pennsylvania’s maximum-security prison for men. Free with general admission to the Barnes, Visions will be on view in the first-floor classroom of the Collection Gallery from July 5 through August 26, 2024.
In summer 2024, the Barnes Foundation will present Matisse & Renoir: New Encounters at the Barnes, an exhibition featuring a selection of renowned canvases from its modern European art collection.
Emily A. Cavanagh Elected to the Barnes Foundation Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation today announced that Emily A. Cavanagh, lawyer and patron of the arts, has been elected to the Board of Trustees, and that longtime trustee, Stephen J. Harmelin, Esq., has been named Trustee Emeritus.
