The Barnes Foundation Announces the 2022 Barnes Art Ball

Benefit event celebrating the Barnes’s centennial and Modigliani Up Close exhibition

Featuring special performances by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, filmmaker and artist Rashid Zakat, and The Illustrious Blacks

Philadelphia, PA, October 13, 2022—The Barnes Foundation has announced its annual benefit, the Barnes Art Ball, taking place at the Barnes on Friday, October 21. An art-filled celebration of creativity, this year’s Art Ball brings together artists, philanthropists, collectors, and connectors to celebrate the Barnes’s centennial and tenth anniversary on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Funds raised directly support the Barnes’s educational mission and its commitment to caring for the collection, presenting diverse exhibitions, and providing innovative programs for the community.

In addition to these important milestones in the Barnes’s history, this year’s Art Ball also celebrates the opening of Modigliani Up Close, a major loan exhibition on view in the Roberts Gallery that shares new insights into Amedeo Modigliani’s working methods and materials, offering a unique opportunity to examine how he constructed and composed his signature works. The result of a multiyear global research effort, Modigliani Up Close has brought the international art community together to create a collaborative vision of the artist’s practice, leaving a legacy for future scholarship on the artist.

“We are delighted to celebrate this year’s centennial edition of the Barnes Art Ball with our remarkable community of friends, patrons, and supporters, whose commitment and generosity ensure the lasting success of the Barnes and our educational mission,” says Nina Diefenbach, senior vice president and deputy director for advancement. “This year’s Art Ball offers us a spectacular occasion to reflect on our progressive founding vision, celebrate the impact of our programming and scholarship, and inspire excitement for the Barnes’s next 100 years.”

In addition to exclusive after-hours access to Modigliani Up Close and the Barnes collection, the Barnes Art Ball will spotlight Philadelphia artists with acrobatic pop-up performances by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, a contemporary circus company dedicated to original works of genre-defying art, and filmmaker and artist Rashid Zakat’s audiovisual performance Revival! The evening will also include a high-energy performance by The Illustrious Blacks, a psychedelic-inspired DJ duo fusing funk, hypnotic house, and cosmic pop.

ABOUT THE BARNES FOUNDATION
The Barnes Foundation is a nonprofit cultural and educational institution that shares its unparalleled art collection with the public, organizes special exhibitions, and presents programming that fosters new ways of thinking about human creativity. The Barnes collection is displayed in ensembles that integrate art and objects from across cultures and time periods, overturning traditional hierarchies and revealing universal elements of human expression. Home to one of the world’s finest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern paintings—including the largest groups of paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne in existence—the Barnes brings together renowned canvases by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, and Vincent van Gogh, alongside African, Asian, ancient, medieval, and Native American art as well as metalwork, furniture, and decorative art.

The Barnes Foundation was established by Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to “promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture.” A visionary collector and pioneering educator, Dr. Barnes was also a fierce advocate for the civil rights of African Americans, women, and the economically marginalized. Committed to racial equality and social justice, he established a scholarship program to support young Black artists, writers, and musicians who wanted to further their education. Dr. Barnes was deeply interested in African American culture and became actively involved in the Harlem Renaissance, during which he collaborated with philosopher Alain Locke and Charles S. Johnson, the scholar and activist, to promote awareness of the artistic value of African art.

Since moving to Philadelphia in 2012, the Barnes Foundation has expanded its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice, teaching visual literacy in groundbreaking ways; investing in original scholarship relating to its collection; and enhancing accessibility throughout every facet of its programs.

The Barnes Foundation is situated in Lenapehoking, the ancestral homeland of the Lenape people. Read our Land Acknowledgment.
