About the Class
Artist, collector, and benefactor Gustave Caillebotte played a pivotal role in the impressionist movement, yet he is often overshadowed by his contemporaries. Caillebotte’s unique modern perspective and tireless patronage of his peers advanced impressionism in the late 19th century. His paintings provide a glimpse into the rarified world of upper-class Paris, and his financial support ensured that impressionist exhibitions were mounted even during times of great uncertainty.
Rediscover one of the driving forces of modernism. We will study Caillebotte’s paintings, from balconies to boulevards, in great detail and consider his work in the broader historical context of artist-run exhibitions, urbanization, and fashion.
