About the Class

A painting on the wall is a visual portal, a mysteriously beckoning and hypnotic window to a different world. For a painter, the playful yet intentional arrangements of light and dark, color and shape, are the visual tools used for reaching out and taking viewers by the hand, leading them into places of feeling, mood, and sensation.

Have you ever wondered how artists conceptualize their work? This course explores visual imagination from an artist’s point of view and delves into the ways in which painters transform their ideas, emotions, and unique perspectives into tangible, meaningful works of art. Taught by Philadelphia painter Stuart Shils, this class offers a fresh approach to looking at art that engages the analytical and intuitive minds.

Instructor

Stuart Shils

Shils, a Philadelphia native, has been a painter for more than 40 years. His passion for the visual world was shaped early on during childhood urban train rides, where glass windows would “condense light and landscape into an almost theological visual presence.” Shils studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has had solo exhibitions at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, Davis & Langdale, and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects.
