About the Class

From the gladiatorial battles at the Colosseum to the wall paintings of Pompeii, ancient Rome has captivated imaginations for centuries. But who, exactly, were the Romans? In this four-session course, we’ll explore the major achievements of the Roman world by looking closely at key examples of architecture, painting, and sculpture in order to gain a better understanding of this fascinating civilization. Our journey begins in the city of Rome itself before we dive into the empire’s numerous provinces, including those in Britain, north Africa, and the eastern Mediterranean. We’ll also touch on the lasting impact this ancient culture has had on our modern world.

Kaelin Jewell

Jewell is a senior instructor in adult education at the Barnes. She holds a PhD in late Roman and early medieval art history from Temple University and has worked as a field archeologist. In addition to her work at the Barnes, Jewell is the art historian for an underwater archaeology project near the Sicilian town of Marzamemi.
