The Barnes Foundation has announced a variety of virtual programs for art lovers of all ages and holiday shopping opportunities during its temporary closure per Philadelphia’s “Safer at Home” restrictions designed to limit the spread of COVID-19. Currently, the Barnes plans to reopen on Saturday, January 2, 2021.

For the safety of our staff, visitors, members, and volunteers, and in accordance with new restrictions announced yesterday by city government and health officials, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Barnes Foundation, Eastern State Penitentiary, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art jointly commit to temporarily close to the public in support of Philadelphia’s broad-based, stepped-up effort to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Barnes Foundation has announced Facing Change, a new online speaker series and community dialogue uniting artists, scholars, and activists virtually for multicultural and intergenerational conversations about race in America. An ongoing series taking place every other month, Facing Change is free, and registration is required.

The Barnes Foundation has announced special extended hours between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s holidays—opening as early as 9 am and closing at 6 pm on select days. Normal open Friday through Monday, the Barnes will also be open on Thursday, December 31, for New Year’s Eve.

The Barnes Foundation has announced its annual benefit, the Barnes Art Ball, taking place as a unique virtual event this year on Friday, October 16, at 6 pm. A chance to see and be seen, the 2020 Barnes Art Ball will be an evening of dynamic artistic and musical performances, unexpected guest appearances, and a virtual exploration of the new exhibition, Elijah Pierce’s America. Funds raised from the Barnes Art Ball directly support the Barnes’s mission and its dedication to caring for the collection, presenting diverse exhibitions, and providing innovative educational and public programs for the community and its broad array of visitors.

In September 2020, the Barnes Foundation will present Elijah Pierce’s America, a landmark exhibition featuring the rich and varied sculpture of woodcarver Elijah Pierce (1892–1984). On view in the Roberts Gallery from September 27, 2020, through January 10, 2021, this is the first major retrospective of Pierce’s work to be presented outside his home city of Columbus, Ohio, for more than 25 years.

The Barnes Foundation has announced it will reopen to the public on Saturday, July 25, at noon, following member days on Thursday, July 23, Friday, July 24, and the morning of Saturday, July 25, with extended hours each day, and new health and safety protocols for staff and visitors. The Marie Cuttoli: The Modern Thread from Miró to Man Ray exhibition, which opened less than three weeks before the Barnes closed on March 13, has been extended through August 23.

Art and culture is beginning to reopen in Philadelphia. Following a closure of over three months to protect against the spread of COVID-19, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Barnes Foundation, Eastern State Penitentiary, The Franklin Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Rodin Museum have jointly announced plans to reopen with new health and safety protocols for staff and visitors, as state and city restrictions begin to lift.

In a proactive measure to protect against the spread of COVID-19, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Barnes Foundation, The Franklin Institute, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have made the joint decision to temporarily close to the public and postpone or cancel public programming and events for a minimum of two weeks.

The Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation today announced that Armando I. Bengochea and Jeffrey A. Honickman have been elected to the Board of Trustees.
