About the Exhibition

Just Us is an exhibition of original artwork created by artists at State Correctional Institution (SCI) Phoenix, southeast Pennsylvania’s maximum-security prison for men, and artists from Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Rec Crew, a job readiness and life skills program for justice-impacted young adults. Throughout the spring, Rec Crew members participated in art education classes in the Barnes collection while Barnes instructors visited artists at SCI Phoenix to discuss the exhibition.

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, Just Us reflects on the past, present, and future of the American experiment through the unique perspectives of these artists. Works consider the power of memory, celebrate heritage and community, and explore the resilience of hope while confronting the nation’s struggles and still-unrealized aspirations. With voices bold and subtle, Just Us speaks to our present moment and encourages viewers to dream of a better tomorrow.

On view in the first-floor classroom of the Collection Gallery.
