About the Class

Painters use color to shape our visual, physical, and emotional experience of art. In this four-session on-site class led by working artist Michael Kowbuz, we’ll examine the physical properties of color through discussions of color theory, pigment development, and the transition from theory to practice in the creation of paintings.

Together, we’ll investigate color concepts such as hue, value, chroma, temperature, and contrast by studying works by Seurat, Degas, Cézanne, Matisse, and others. Participants will then apply these ideas by creating a cut-paper collage from their own photographs. No prior studio experience is required.

Capacity: 25

Barnes classes will:

  • Sharpen your observational and critical-thinking skills.
  • Improve your ability to communicate about art.
  • Deepen your appreciation for cultures and histories outside your own.
