In fall 2023, the Barnes Foundation will present Marie Laurencin: Sapphic Paris, the first major US exhibition dedicated to French artist Marie Laurencin in over 30 years. Co-curated by Simonetta Fraquelli, consulting curator for the Barnes; and Cindy Kang, curator at the Barnes, this exhibition explores Laurencin’s career, from her self-portraits to her collaborative decorative projects; from her early cubist paintings to her signature works—feminine and discreetly queer—that defined 1920s Paris.
The Barnes Announces Sixth Annual Barnes on the Block with Mural Arts Philadelphia & AFROTAINO
The Barnes Foundation announces the sixth annual Barnes on the Block, in collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia and AFROTAINO, on Sunday, July 16, 11 am–5 pm. Barnes on the Block with Mural Arts Philadelphia and AFROTAINO is presented through PNC Arts Alive. Taking place on the grounds of the Barnes Foundation, Barnes on the Block is a free block party that encourages neighbors to connect through various forms of creativity.
Following a large-scale, multi-institutional research project, the Institute for Learning Innovation and a consortium of 11 museums across the United States have announced the results of a new study designed to define and measure the value of museums—how they contribute to the overall well-being of visitors—in an empirical, verifiable, and monetizable way. The Value of Museums Study was unveiled at the 2023 American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting in Denver on Friday, May 19.
The Barnes Foundation Announces the Launch of Digitized Dr. Albert C. Barnes Correspondence
The Barnes Foundation has announced that the complete correspondence of Albert C. Barnes is now fully digitized. The Barnes will publish the material in batches, beginning with the correspondence between Dr. Barnes and two of his most important confidants: philosopher John Dewey, and art critic and collector Leo Stein.
In summer 2023, the Barnes Foundation will present William Edmondson: A Monumental Vision, the first major East Coast exhibition dedicated to the work of self-taught American sculptor William Edmondson (c. 1874–1951) in decades. Though Edmondson was considered one of the most important Black artists of the American South in the early 20th century, in-depth attention to his work has been sporadic. Co-curated by the Barnes’s James Claiborne, Curator of Public Programs, and Nancy Ireson, Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions & Gund Family Chief Curator, this exhibition sheds new light on Edmondson’s practice and artistry and explores the artist and his oeuvre within the context of African American social history.

The Barnes Foundation and the Curtis Institute of Music present John Dowell: A Public Intimate Space, an immersive performance piece created by artist John E. Dowell, Jr., blending photography, movement, and sound to explore the sacred nature of the public square—in this case Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square. A Public Intimate Space will take place at the Barnes on Thursday, December 8, 7–8:30 pm.
