About the Event
Did you know that Matisse’s Joy of Life once hung where Rousseau’s Scouts Attacked by a Tiger is now?
The collection we encounter today shows how Dr. Albert Barnes left it at the time of his death in 1951. During his lifetime, however, he regularly rearranged his ensembles, adding new paintings, West African sculpture, Native American pottery and jewelry, and Pennsylvania German decorative arts.
In this exclusive online talk, Amanda McKnight, director of archives, library, and special collections, will give an unprecedented look at Room 14 through the years. Presenting new research and seldom-seen archival resources, including historical photographs and notes to staff written by Dr. Barnes himself, this talk will detail a rarely discussed aspect of the foundation’s history.
