Works on Paper in the Barnes Collection

About the Class

Perhaps more than any other medium, works on paper can convey a sense of immediacy and spontaneity, as they often reveal marks from the artist’s hand. The Barnes collection contains a rich array of works on paper, including images in ink, graphite, watercolor, tempera, pastel, and gouache. However, these pieces are easy to overlook in Dr. Barnes’s ensembles due to their relatively small size. Taught directly in the collection galleries, this class provides an intimate viewing experience and sheds new light on these works. We will explore the processes artists use to create works on paper and look at how the chosen media affects the expressive qualities of a finished piece. We’ll also examine the unique conservation techniques required to care for these works.
