About the Class

Though the Barnes is best known for its modern European paintings, it is also home to important works of art from around the world. This one-day online workshop will introduce some of these often-overlooked objects and their rich artistic traditions. Using deep-zoom technology, we will closely examine highlights of the collection's West African sculptures, Native American pottery, Mediterranean antiquities, Persian paintings, and more. Through careful study and robust discussion of these objects, this class will illuminate universal strategies that connect artists across time and place.

Instructor

Kaelin Jewell

Jewell is a senior instructor in adult education at the Barnes. She holds a PhD in late Roman and early medieval art history from Temple University and has worked as a field archeologist. In addition to her work at the Barnes, Jewell is the art historian for an underwater archaeology project near the Sicilian town of Marzamemi.
