About the Class

Ever since the 1860s, when the impressionists challenged the generally accepted rules of painting, artists have been forging new approaches to self-expression. Sometimes these approaches can be puzzling, even off-putting. This course will give you the tools to unravel the mystery behind paintings that distort their subject or banish it altogether. We’ll begin by closely studying works in the Barnes collection by Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso, among others, then move on to more contemporary artists like Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, and Agnes Martin.

Capacity: 18

Linda Robinson

Robinson studied at the Barnes Foundation under Violette de Mazia. Before joining the Barnes teaching staff seven years ago, she taught adult art history classes at local colleges.
